After installing your Minecraft plugin, you might want to configure it to your own needs. Unlike installing it, configuring a Minecraft plugin can be either simple or quite complex. Always read the plugin’s documentation to avoid confusion, as even the best developers can’t figure out how to configure a plugin without reading through the docs.
Configuring your Minecraft plugin
Before you start, you’ll need to understand if the plugin you’re using has a configuration file or not; some plugins like Vault don’t have a configuration.
If it does have a configuration, head over your server files in the panel, open the folder named after your plugin, and click “config.yml”. You will see many key-value pairs, which have strings, integers, booleans, arrays, and objects. Here’s an example of a plugin configuration:
updates:
enabled: true
every: 5
url: "https://example.com/updates/latest.jar"
whitelist:
- LookedRobob
- Abo3leesh
The updates key is a section that contains other settings (like enabled, every, and url).
Each setting is written as a key-value pair, where the key is the name and the value is the data assigned to it.
enabledis a boolean value (true or false) that turns updates on or off.everyis an integer (a whole number) that controls how often the plugin checks for updates (in seconds).urlis a string (text inside quotes) that points to the update file externally.- The
whitelistkey is an array. An array can contain many values.
Be careful with indentation in YAML files, as using the wrong spacing can break your configuration.
Again, you’ll have to consult the plugin’s docs to fully understand how to properly add your settings without breaking the configuration file. Once you have changed this file, make sure to restart your server.
Conclusions
If you know basics about code, configuring your plugin can be really simple. However, don’t get demotivated by this fact. Even the best developer can’t understand how to configure a plugin if they didn’t read the documentation.
